Day 1 - Sunday, Sept 24 - Home to Bedford, PA

Today we are starting our road trip to San Diego, bringing the things that Amy couldn't take in suitcases when she flew out. The Thule pod on top of the car is stuffed full, a portable air conditioner and other boxes of her things in the back of the car with just enough room for our small suitcases, plug-in cooler and some extra food.

It was a warm and muggy morning as we finished loading up.

As usual on Sunday morning, we went to church and Carmen was teaching Sunday School.

We finished up our church tasks and left just afternoon, stopping at the Ramapo rest area on the Thruway to eat the lunch that we had brought. The traffic coming down the Thruway was very heavy and regularly slowed down to 20-30 mph for no particular other than too many cars.

The trip through NJ and PA was uneventful other than it was in the 90s almost all the way here. Fortunately, the car AC is working well.

One interesting aspect of the terrain going across central PA is the long mountain ranges. They are uniform in height and not very broad. It isn't practical for the highway to go around so in a number of places the PA turnpike has tunnels that go directly through the mountain. I remember being fascinated by this when I was 5-6 years old and traveling out to Wisconsin with my grandparents.

Day 29 - Sunday, Oct 22 - Hill City, SD to Badlands NP to Mitchell, SD

We went back to Mt. Rushmore in the morning to see it in the sunshine and to take some more photos. After leaving the Black Hills, the terrain was mostly rolling prairie for the next 300 miles. Although it appeared to be mostly for cattle grazing, we did see fields of sunflower, corn, sorghum, oats, hay and something bright green that we couldn't identify. Our first stop was the world-famous Wall Drug Store in Wall SD, just outside of the Badlands NP. There are signs for hundreds of miles around advertising Wall Drug. It is a huge place, with shops for jewelry, rocks, western gear, souvenirs and a huge cafe with the world's largest collection of western art. Day 28 - Saturday, Oct 21 - Ft. Collins, CO to Mt. Rushmore, SD to Hill City, SD

Starting mileage:  7148 Starting time: 8:30 am Ending mileage: 7501 Ending time: 5:30 pm Travel mileage:  353 Travel time: 9:00 hours Leaving Fort Collins, it is just a short way up I-25 to Wyoming and rolling prairie that we would be traveling through most of the day. There were electronic signs warning of 50+ mph winds and our car was certainly being blown around. A wind farm on one side of the road had all the turbines spinning but the wind farm on the other side didn't have any turbines turning, strange. The wind must often be very strong as most houses had tree windbreaks planted on the west side of the house and cattle were huddled behind wooden shelters along the road. There are also functioning old-fashioned windmills that pump water for the cattle on the range and occasional pump-jacks slowly bringing up crude oil.
